Why the name Hawkbill Base?SUBMARINE PART WILL SAIL TO ARCO
The sail from the submarine USS HAWKBILL SSN666 was delivered to the site
of a proposed Idaho Science Center in Arco Idaho. The sail, of the submarine, will symbolize the center's “Idaho's Submarine in the Desert” theme. The museum will commemorate the history of the National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory's Reactor Testing Station, the largest concentration of nuclear reactors in the world.
Arco is the nearest city to the station.
The sail was cut into three pieces and loaded onto three trucks for delivery to Arco where it was welcomed with a ceremony and a parade.
The sail was stripped to the metal to remove classified materials and covered with a primer coat of paint. It will be placed on the foundation and welded back together. The sail will be painted and walkways around the sail to the center will be installed.
